Rebels 'preparing for major attack'
POST REPORTERS
Yala _ The insurgency is gaining strength in the deep South, with more militants infiltrating some areas in preparation for a major onslaught, Police Region 9 chief Adul Saengsingkaew admitted yesterday.
He said the rebels would strike when and where the authorities appear weak.
His comments coincided with intelligence reports that separatist militants were planning sabotage attacks in Saba Yoi, Thepha and Chana districts of Songkhla, possibly tomorrow.
An intelligence source said weapons were being smuggled into the areas and bombs were being assembled.
Security in insurgent-prone localities has been beefed up.
Pol Lt-Gen Adul said the police forward command centre in Yala had just completed a tactical review, including retraining for personnel and a boosting of capabilities.
Democrat party chief adviser Chuan Leekpai yesterday castigated the government for failing to pinpoint the cause of the unrest.
It was well over two years since the insurgency flared afresh and the authorities were totally lost in their efforts to restore peace in the region, the former prime minister said.
Mr Chuan was speaking after travelling to Narathiwat with other party members to pay respects to victims of Sunday's bombing at a motorcycle repair shop in Rangae district which killed three people.
In Pattani, Pol Senior Sgt-Maj Prakop Kaewmanee was wounded in the face by an explosion near a roadside shelter on Road 42 in Khok Pho district yesterday morning.
He and three soldiers had just escorted some teachers to school. They were about to take a rest in the shelter when the bomb exploded. The soldiers were unhurt.
Police believed the bomb contained RDX, a very powerful explosive with industrial and military uses.
In Kapho district, Robuedee Bapa, 54, assistant to a village headman, was shot and critically wounded on his way to tap rubber early yesterday morning.
The blue circles are the planned attack areas....
