North, Northeast to be hit by more rain
Relief officials in Nan yesterday evacuated residents from seven villages in Tha Wang Pha district as the northern province was hit by floods and rains.
The weather bureau has predicted the rains will hit more provinces in the North and Northeast.
Residents of 3,000 houses in the district were moved to safer places after the water level rose two metres due to heavy rains since Friday, officials said.
Floods were reported in eight districts of Nan _ Bo Klue, Thung Chang, Song Khwer, Chiang Klang, Pua, Tha Wang Pha, Muang Nan, and Phu Phiang sub-district, the Interior Ministry's Disaster Relief Centre said.
Clinics in Tha Wang Pha and Chiang Klang districts were submerged but community-based hospitals were still operational.
Muang Nan district, the heart of the province, was 10 to 20cm under water. About 120 patients, including those in intensive care units and facilities on the ground floor of the provincial hospital, have been moved to upper floors.
Flash floods claimed the life of a 43-year-old fisherman in Bo Klue district as the current washed him away yesterday.
A 60-year-old woman in Tha Wang Pha broke her arm.
Floods were also reported in Chiang Rai's Doi Luang district due to continuing rains. The flood level exceeded one metre, affecting more than 500 houses and 5,000 rai of farmland.
In Phayao, flash floods hit Pong and Chiang Muan districts and the water quickly flowed into the Yom River, keeping authorities in the downstream province of Phrae on full alert.
Provincial officials in Phrae said they were monitoring the river's level and were prepared to evacuate people living along the river banks as the excessive amount of water is expected to reach the province today.
The Meteorological Department reported that low pressure areas were passing over the North and the upper Northeast so heavy rains were likely to continue there until tomorrow.
It warned people living close to water passages near mountains and in lowlands to be prepared for possible flash floods and overflowing rivers.
The risk areas, according to the department, were Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Udon Thani and Sakon Nakhon.
