Coyote girl show shocks outspoken senator
University urged to say sorry for display
By Wichayant Boonchote
Outspoken Senator Rabiabrat Pongpanich is pressing Prince of Songkla University in Songkhla's Hat Yai district to apologise to the public for allowing a racy display of the Coyote showgirls at its recent agricultural fair. Ms Rabiabrat, the wife of caretaker Deputy Interior Minister Sermsak Pongpanich, criticised the university for making a lapse of judgement.
It is unacceptable that such a prestigious university permitted socially-degrading acts to take place under its nose, she said.
The National Agricultural Fair was organised between Aug 10 and 21 at the university's Hat Yai campus.
Some fair-goers and their families complained that they were offended by the sight of scantily-clad Coyote girls showing off lurid dance moves on stage and speaking provocatively to the crowds to draw people to their booths.
The university must apologise to the public as it may have lowered the standard of moral propriety regarding what activities are permissible in an educational institute's backyard, said Ms Rabiabrat.
''It's about making an obsession with sex excuseable. We need to work together to clean up social rubbish. What kind of society will our children live in if we don't act?'' she said.
Piyapat Pothipakdi, a Songkhla-based journalist, said the showgirls were a crowd-puller at the fair, even for his little nephew.
He said, however, that the show was out of place and the girls, employed by exhibitors at the fair, spoke rather ''suggestively'' to people.
Patcharee Leelapong, a 37-year-old housewife, said she took her 11-year-old daughter with her to the fair. As soon as they entered the campus grounds, they saw the Coyote girls in one of the booths put on their ''butt-shaking'' dance.
She said no children of impressionable age should watch the show. The university must take responsibility.
Ramita Thurabut, managing director of event-organising firm Tam Organiser, said the Coyote girls earn around 1,000 baht each per day.
